BONDI SURF BATHERS’ LIFE SAVING CLUB AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONS
The information was obtained from club records. However, Surf Life Saving Australia does not recognise the surfboard rescue and surfoplane races and the surfboard-riding competition, which were won by Bondi representatives in the 1930s, as ‘championship events’.
The first Australian Surf Life Saving Championships were held at Bondi on the 20th March, 1915.
With the exception of the years around the First and Second World Wars (1916-19 and 1941-45), the national titles have since been held towards the end of each season. For most of the early years, the titles were held in the Sydney area before they were switched to Queensland in 1947 and later rotated around the states.
Bondi hosted the national titles in 1915, 1921, 1928, 1931-1938 inclusive, 1940, 1949 and 1957. The first Australian championships for women’s events were held in the 1984-85 season at Point Leo, Victoria.
