1 June 2018 – Edition 66

Intro & Welcome

We are now a few weeks into the off-season and while we shiver in our last days of Autumn, Jacob has headed to warmer climates for a few weeks of well deserved rest and relaxation.

Renewal notices were sent out a week or so ago and fees are now due. Our Early Bird discount has encouraged many to renew already. If you have not done so yet, please remember the discount only applies to renewals completed by 15 July 2018. Please take the time to check your details are current when paying online and that you remember to pay for locker, board storage and gym fees if they apply.

Bondi nominees attended the Branch Awards of Excellence Presentation Dinner on Saturday. The event celebrates the outstanding achievements and contributions to Surf Life Saving made by the many talented members from the Sydney Branch. Congratulations to all our nominees. Full details are below.

Finally, a quick and sincere best wishes to Siobhan O’Toole who will be taking some time out from her many roles at the Club. Siobhan, you have the whole Club behind you and we look forward to seeing you on the beach again very soon.

Wishing all our members a safe, warm and peaceful off-season.

Upcoming pool rescue events

The NSW State Pool Rescue Championships are coming up on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July at the Peninsula Leisure Centre in Woy Woy.

Pool rescue is a growing part of Surf Life Saving and is prominent in international competition. Pool rescue events, as well as surf and beach events, will be part of the World Championships in Adelaide in November.

Events are available from U11’s through to Masters. Competitors’ life saving skills are tested with events involving obstacles, mannequin tows, and towing ‘patients’ (mannequins). Lifesavers who are proficient and have met their competition eligibility for the 2017-18 season can compete. Age groups include: U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U17, U19, Open, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+.

We will be holding training sessions in June. Check the Facebook training page for dates and times.

Life Member Allan Scott receives Waverley Council award

We are pleased to inform members that Honorary Life Member Allan Scott (a.k.a. The Bondi Blogger) was recently awarded a Mayoral Commendation in the Community Volunteer category of the 2018 Waverley Council Local Hero Awards. This followed a personal nomination initiated by member John Turner, an early morning swimmer associate of Allan, which was endorsed by the Club Executive.

The nomination focused on Allan’s 50-year plus continuous contribution to our Club’s operations by his organizing of various fundraising efforts, large and small, and support for Club activities.

The award was accepted on Allan’s behalf by two of his children, Harriett and Duncan, in a ceremony at Easts Leagues Club on 23 May 2018. Allan has not been in good health of late and was unable to attend the awards function. Deputy President Pep Font represented the Club.

– Rod Harvey

Members may have noticed the absence of the Bondi Blogger’s ‘Unreliable History’ segments in the Bondi Surfer over recent months. Unfortunately our Blogger mate, Allan Scott, is currently unwell. We send our best wishes to him and his family.
