The Bondi Surfer No. 70

AGM EDITION – 26 July 2018

Intro & Welcome

The 2018/19 season is well under way. Patrols and other activities start in the next few months.

Thank you to all who came to the AGM on Sunday and a special thanks to all the Office bearers from last Season. The Club is in a good place. Each Director’s portfolio performed well and the Club is in a strong financial position. Over the next Season, we intend to improve further and have more engagement between members, with a strong social scene and member’s directory.

Welcome to four new directors been voted in at the AGM –
Marissa Saunders (Director of Admin)
Brett Pattinson (Director of Marketing/Sponsorship)
Narelle Moore (Director of Junior Activities)
Dori Miller (Director of Surf Sports)

Each director will be looking to grow their teams and sub committees. We had success with our recent call out for the Finance Sub Committee. There are five members looking to join the team.

Fees must be paid to be a member at Bondi. Great to see such a high take up in renewals already. The early bird discount finished on 15 July and tags will be turned off at the end of July (1/4 of the financial season has passed).

Let me know if you are keen to help out on the marketing / sponsorship side. This includes social media, merchandise, sponsor management, brand activations and any new ideas you may have for the Club.

See you on the beach!

Jacob Waks
Club President

Club Finances 2017/18

From a financial standpoint, the 2017/18 Club year witnessed another positive result.

We recorded another surplus, in addition to adding $85k to the cash balance (up to $910k at 30 April 2018). While the surplus was not as high as the previous Club year, this is explained by a number of financial investments the Club made during the year.

Notable examples include:

  • a new air conditioning system upstairs in the Blue Room
  • professional club coaching (the legendary Robert ‘Chapo’ Chapman)
  • an IRB purchased in 2018, funded through a grant from Bendigo Bank in the 2017 year
  • fit out costs associated with the beach tunnel, which has been beneficial for Patrols and Nippers
  • an increase in paid staff hours to improve member service and assist the Board of Management to enact initiatives
  • refurbishment of the Office
  • drainage improvements on the north side of the Club
  • the first substantial costs incurred for our future clubhouse redevelopment project…

Looking forward, we are targeting increasing revenues of $1m for the current Club year. If we can achieve this, or get close, it will ensure we bolster the club’s cash position in advance of our future redevelopment.

We believe this can be achieved by:

  • stronger fundraising and donation drives, in part spearheaded by a building redevelopment fundraising committee
  • installing a kiosk on the northern side of the Club during the summer months
  • maintaining strong financial control on outgoings and expenses

Bondi excels at the NSW Pool Rescue Championships

Our team had great results at the New South Wales State Pool Rescue Championships in Woy Woy on 14 and 15 July!

Our Open team exceeded expectations and placed an impressive 5th place overall in the point score. This is a great improvement from our 14th place finish last year.

Our Masters team defended its title from last year, winning the Champion Club for the second time.

Each year more people get involved with pool rescue. At this year’s championships we had 13 competitors for the first time… some coming home with medals. We also had a number of Nippers attend training sessions. Congratulations to Declan Fletcher who competed in the Under 11 age group.

Congratulations to all involved with these achievements. You represented our Club with great passion, pride and good sportsmanship.

Pool Rescue events are part of the World Championships in Adelaide in November. We are planning more training sessions in the coming months. Watch for more information in upcoming Surfers…
