Intro & Welcome

Thank you to everyone that assisted with City to Surf this year, the organisation of which starts a few months out. Special thanks to Alex Nothling and Helen Jenkinson for their work leading up to it. Also thank you to Justin Biggs for all his work in the lead up to the day.

On the day, we had over 40 volunteers helping out AND this year was our most profitable year on record from City to Surf fundraising. It was great to see so many members enjoying the day, as well.

Our resident caretaker, Lia Trebilcock is leaving her role to pursue other adventures, this leaves a vacancy in the caretaker position. Please see the note below if you are interested. Thank you Lia for your work in the role. While there is the benefit of accommodation at the Club for the caretaker, it definitely is not an easy role to ensure the Club is looking in its best state regularly.

Gear inspection every year is a massive day for us. We need more people to assist with the set up and pack up of it. We will be also doing a working bee around the boat shed to clean it after the gear inspection on Saturday, 1 September. Whether you are an active member or associate member, we can use your assistance in the morning starting from 7:00am.

Our marketing director, Brett Pattinson, has had a few people already look to assist him this year however we need a few more in the following roles:

– Website manager – Content is created by sections. However, we need one person to manage it.
– Copy Writer – We are looking to put a few marketing pieces together and need assistance.
– PR – We need assistance for the marketing team with PR strategy.
– Marketing ideas – We need a few people keen to contribute ideas and run projects. We can always do more at the Club. However, we need more input.

If you are interested on any of the above, write to Brett at or contact the Office. Any ideas are welcome.

Good luck to the nominees this Saturday night at the SLSNSW awards of excellence. I will update everyone in the next Surfer on how we went!

See you on the beach!

Club President

Clubhouse renovations: a positive update

Aboard the steel clad vessel of ‘Unsinkable III’, the Board of Management and Renovations Planning sub-committee have made a number significant achievements towards attaining a DA as-late.

These include a commitment from Waverley Council to relocate the unsightly works yard at the rear of the Club, opening an opportunity for rectification of imperative functional issues with the existing Club.

Also a draft Conservation Management Plan, which deals with Planning and Heritage, has recently been adopted unanimously by Waverley Council. The document was previously a significant hurdle. Drafted over two years, assisted with input from the Club’s archive officer – the late Al Scott – and several of the Club’s section heads, the plan was comprehensive in its detail. The Club worked closely with Council on the document, ensuring a well-balanced report that recognises the needs of the Surf Club to improve its facilities.

The Club’s architect has met with each of Club’s Section Heads to inform the design brief. Momentum is building towards an approved DA. We’re looking forward to continuing to ride the positive wave.

Saturday, 1 September, 7:00-10:00am

Hi team! We need an army of helpers for gear inspection and a shed clearout.

We are going to use gear inspection day as an opportunity to clean out the gear shed while we have everything out, but we will need upwards of 30 people to get it done quickly and effectively!

Please – if you can spare some time, fill out the google doc below and come down.

We will have a skip, so we can throw out anything that shouldn’t be there and that includes any personal gear. If you don’t have permission to store something in there, you best take it out before 1 September or it will go bye byes.

Let’s start the season with a workable space (that isn’t a death trap!).

I look forward to seeing a heap of you then.

Reminder: get your gear before Gear Inspection Day

Our annual gear inspection is fast approaching. We always use this time to spring clean and ensure all Surf Club gear (ATV, IRB, Education, FA, Patrol, Radios) is in working order, recorded, and in its proper place.

This year, it will happen on 1 September. All gear will be off limits from 4.00pm on Friday, 31 August and 11.00am on Saturday, 1 September.

This is a gentle reminder that, unless you have a special authorisation, all personal craft in the craft room or boat shed is a health and safety risk. It will be removed on Gear Inspection Day.

Unauthorised craft will be left on the driveway for owners to collect. Uncollected craft will be assumed donated to the Club and will be discarded or sold on.

If you are in any doubt as to whether your personal craft is authorised to be stored at the Club please contact the Board Captains as soon as possible.

World champion Bondi paddler boarders

Arduous training through the dark mornings and cold water of winter rewarded Bondi lifesavers Jason Taylor and Ryan Jenkin, who recently won the paddleboard teams race in their division of the Molokai to Oahu world championships in Hawaii.

“After the surf club season finished we committed ourselves to a strict training campaign under the guidance of our coach Pat Moore,” Taylor said. “The training was brutal at times, but the mateship with others also competing in the race made it more bearable.”

The Molokai-Oahu races are held in July each year across the Ka’iwi Channel between the two Hawaiian islands, in treacherous water and attract paddlers from around the world.

Taylor and Jenkin covered the 52km course in 6 hours, 44 minutes and 4 seconds.
