|The Bondi Surfer – Bondi Surf Life Saving Club Your update on all things Bondi Surf Club!
The Bondi Surfer No. 84
22 February 2019
Intro & Welcome
Thank you to all our patrolling members! Our patrols have been receiving consistent praise from other clubs, the lifeguards and also Sydney Branch for a number of rescues carried out recently. I’m proud to see that we continue to maintain the high standard expected of our club in carrying out our reason for existing as a club – Saving lives.
Our social team has been busy with a range of events coming up with a trivia night in March and organising the Blue and White Ball in May. The ball will be the first one we are having for a few years and they always used to sell out quickly! Book a table and organise your partners, friends, family and other club members together. The ball will be held in the Establishment Ballroom in the city.
This weekend due to storm weather, we have had to postpone the Bondi Blue Water Challenge.
ALL BBWC EVENTS including the ocean swims, beach run and nipper challenge have been postponed to Sunday 28 April, 2019. Current registrations will still be honoured and transferred to the new date.
We apologise for any inconvenience, but hope to see you back on Bondi Beach for the new date! If you have any questions please get in touch at bondibluewater.
BBWC2019 New Date Details
When – Sunday 28 April, 2019
A date that is coming up on the 24th of March is the annual Stan Mac Relay. It’s one of my favourite days in the lifesaving season, Bondi takes on North Bondi in a 20 swimmer relay. It has been running consistently since the 1942/3 season so make sure you put in your diary to come down and support our club.
See you on the beach

Marketing & Sponsorship
Support the Club over your burger
We are pleased to announce Bondi Surf Club is a ‘Local Matters’ partner with Grill’d burgers at Bondi Junction.
In March, we are one of three groups displayed in the restaurant. Every burger sold comes with a Local Matters token, that you can place in the Bondi Surf Club jar. At the end of the month, Grill’d will count the tokens. (If we get the most tokens, the Club can get $300; runners up get $100 each)
So get on down to Grill’d, eat some burgers, and vote for Bondi Surf Club!
Business Class Personal Training
Once you’ve had your burgers, you will be wanting to work them off.
Do it with the lovely Business Class Personal Training. As members of Bondi Surf Club, we can each get 2 free sessions, including a fitness analysis test and a tailored individual training.
The owner, Pawel Zerebiecki, is based up at Fitness First Spring Street in Bondi Junction and when asked why he wanted to support clubbies, he said:
Contact Pawel directly, and mention that you are a member of Bondi Surf Club: businessclasspt or 0426908786
Not sure who offers great Clubbie discounts? Look for the Bondi sticker in shop windows!

BBWC2019 New Date Details
When – Sunday 28 April, 2019
This is one of the Club’s major fundraisers, and many hands lighten the load. If you have signed up, we hope we can count you in on the new day. A reminder of the main tasks and times:
Beach set up – 6.00am – 8.00am
Blue Room Surf Races
Week 21- 17 February Results are here.
I got up early Sunday and got down in time to do a patrol (the first in far too long a time). A beautiful morning, with very small waves. The Patrol Captain and his team put the buoys (our very own new ones) just off the north flag and the Duck sat on the north buoy for the duration of the race, which was greatly appreciated.
Jacob came down and looked at the conditions and said, "Let’s hold a tube race." Showing his usual aplomb and leadership skills, he got the ball rolling for the very first time, which was truly great. Although not in the winner’s circle, Jacob got two podium finishes. "Not bad for an old timer," I heard someone say and I could not agree more
Sean, in his first race of the season, won A Grade. in what was a good race, with Sean coming through the pack to be a clear winner. Rohan was a couple of metres behind, with Jacob powering up the beach, as I remember him in the first blushes of his youth, which in the scheme of things was only yesterday or thereabouts.
B Grade has become Courtney’s event this season, with another BIG BIG win. A true artist in the water & another heading for A Grade next season. Brett made it a close race, with the ever popular retired Gear Steward a credible third (probably stopped to take a couple of shots).
We had the tube races, which were some very quick races, after a buoy was brought in closer. It also resulted in some very close races, with just the one protest against Jesse due to his height and wading ability. Needless to say, I thought it’s about time that height counted for something.
Not a bad morning and we look forward to seeing more of you in coming weeks.
Hopefully the Tube Race will be again a go and with Jacob’s presence, it is sure to be so.
BM4 and 5 are busy learning skills, with BM4 completing First Aid last weekend and plenty of board work for BM5. Please say hi if you see them around the Club.
Another course to meet demand
Given demand from Nippers, we have added BM6 – which already has 11 people signed up! If you have anyone interested, please get them to sign up.
This course will start with an induction at 10:30am on 24 March and will run 8 weeks (skipping Easter) on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights, finishing in late May.
We will need water safety and trainer support for this course so if you can help please let us know on email@example.com
It’s only 200 days until 7 September 2019, when our first Bronze course for next year starts.
For anyone interested in courses over the next year, the dates are all available here.
SLSA assessor trainees
Well done to 11 trainers who spent last weekend learning the intricacies of the VET training system. They’re on their way to becoming SLSA Assessors.
This course is a stepping stone to a full Cert IV in Training and lifts the skill levels of our Education team. If you want to reinforce your Bronze skills, become a trainer. If you want to reinforce trainer skills, become an assessor!
Remember we love to welcome new trainers on this journey, so please let education know if you would like to join the Education team!

Thomas Mc Farland has been named the 2019 Junior Lifesaver of the Year. It is the first time in about 15 years we have had a Nipper win this award. We know Thomas will wear the Blue and White with pride while representing the Sydney Branch in all things ‘Nippers’ in the next 12 months.
Zoe Fletcher and Thomas Mc Farland, our Nipper Captains, BOTH made it as finalists. Congratulations to both Zoe & Thomas. We are very proud of you.
