Intro & Welcome
This Sunday at 2.00pm will be the Annual Stan and Basil Mcdonald Relay. Twenty of our strongest swimmers will compete against 20 swimmers from North Bondi in a relay around the buoys. We are hosting it this year, so come down wearing Blue and White to support your Club.
We normally have 50-100 supporters on our side of the line. After the race, we invite all of North Bondi and their competitors up to our Club to have the presentation at our Club and enjoy the rest of the night.
Before our next Surfer goes out, our competition team will be heading north to compete at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. Good luck to all our competitors who are going to the event.
See you on the beach,

A history of the ‘Stan Mac’ Relay
The 1942-43 surf season marked the inaugural running of the Stan McDonald Relay, a 20-person-a-side surf relay between Bondi and North Bondi surf clubs. The race is now in its seventy-seventh consecutive year and is one of Australian sports most revered rivalries.
Stan McDonald, head lifeguard on Bondi Beach and also commonly regarded as ‘The King of Bondi,’ initiated the relay between the two clubs in an attempt to enhance camaraderie between North and South. Stan was a member of both clubs and devoted 47 years of his life to the service of visitors to Bondi Beach.
In 1933, Stan retired as a beach inspector and began the family business. Mac’s Beach Hire provided deck chairs, umbrellas, surfoplanes, surfboards, and oil spraying to swimmers and sunbathers.
Stan McDonald passed away in 1959 at age 77. Stan’s son Basil took over the family business. Basil McDonald soon became known as ‘Mr Bondi’ and was a legend in his own right.
Basil joined Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club at age 15 and would eventually become a President, Patron and Life member. He was also a Life member of the Bondi Amateur Men’s Swimming Club, The Union of Old Swimmers, Bondi Icebergs Club, and the Bondi Junior S.L.S.C., of which he was founding President. The Sydney Morning Herald also noted Basil as one of the "men who have been mentioned officially for acts of bravery in risking their lives in raging surf to save drowning people" on the infamous Black Sunday in 1938, where five people drowned.
In the 1986/87 season, upon Basil’s passing, The Great Race was renamed the Stan and Basil McDonald Memorial Relay.
For those reading this who have never been present at The Great Race, you may not understand where the magic lies. For those who have watched or swum in The Great Race, you understand what words cannot describe.

Port Campbell Cadets visit Bondi
Last weekend, a group of SRCs from Port Campbell Surf Club in Victoria spent the weekend at Bondi Beach. They joined Meagher Patrol on Saturday morning and took part in the surf race on Sunday. Lynda McKenzie, their youth coordinator sent this message:
Blue Room Surf Races
Week 25- 7 March Results are here.
I woke to the roof rattling as the heavens continued to flood down upon us. The Patrol was not much better, with everyone wet to the bone by the time we hit the beach. But this did not deter Walsh patrol, whose spirit was unflagging for the next five and a half hours, whilst they waited for Noah to come to the rescue.
For the first time in my memory there was insurrection in the ranks. Everyone wanted to race, but with everyone went off at go, due to the cold wet conditions. The only good thing was there was a wave on.
The second round of the Mick Shearman results full details are:
A Grade saw Scotty win with some good surfing skills (pity his backstroke on Saturday was not as good, when he was well beaten in the Open Champo’s of BASC by ex-member Palmer in an epic struggle). Tim, although he tried hard, could not match the pace set by Scotty up the beach. Anthony, who continues to improve, was third.
B Grade was the Allison gift, whose skills continue to improve and who certainly will be swimming A Grade next season. Siobhan, who is getting back to her best, was a good second and that old war horse (who was always more competitive in the ducks) Paul was third.
Those who completed the resus part of the memorial event, were:
Next week could not be worse, so please make the effort and come down this coming Sunday.
No photos were taken, so…
We pulled some from the archives and provide another from the BASC, when they reigned supreme at “Bondi Baths” even when there was an Olympian in the mix. Look out for Cyril, he has not aged a bit, the others is another story.
See how many you recognise.
