Farewell to 2020
The final patrol days of the year at Bondi, the four days of “Christmas” offered up a range of conditions, weather and challenges that were fitting given the year that was!
Christmas Day started with the Main Hall full to COVID-capacity for the Wayside Chapel service, bingo and lunch and the beach almost empty with the Northern Beaches cluster and persistent drizzle keeping all but the keenest away. Alex Lincoln-Dodgson and the stars of Fullwood featured on both Channel 7 and ABC News in the morning and Craven held the fort for the afternoon.
Boxing Day was similarly quiet for Walsh and Jeppesen but the sun and the crowds came out on Sunday for Baldock and Ormsby patrols. The day was recorded as one of the busiest of the season along the coast. The Baldock team performed a mass rescue at Ramp 2 just before changeover and Ormsby, helped out by a team of extras, had a busy afternoon. Once the rips started pulling, they notched up more than 25 rescues (with no tourists on the beach) and many, many preventions. PC Tom Levi reported that “the lifeguards were impressed with our work, and left us to do most of the rescues” including one by VC Sam Wolf filmed for Bondi Rescue.
With another sudden change in weather for the public holiday Monday, Meagher was expecting a nice quiet patrol. That wasn’t to be with a kayaker search and rescue off Ben Buckler which saw the IRB, two Jet skis and the Lifesaver 21 helicopter called in, then a 2.5m shark was spotted, the alarm was sounded and the water cleared.
