Swimming is a fundamental part

Swimming is a fundamental part of being a Lifesaver but we don’t all start as incredible swimmers. To start you need to be able to swim 400m in under 9 minutes.

Then you join a community of swimmers. Every Sunday during the season we have an optional 400m swim race. There are multiple grades to race depending on your speed. We also race with boards and tubes.

There are swim squads on and off the beach and if you choose to race for the club you may end of travelling with the team (when Covid permitted) to different Carnivals where you will represent the club in the blue and white Bondi cap. All age groups can race.

Your journey to become a Lifesaver starts with gaining your Bronze Medallion where we teach you all you need to know about beach awareness, safety and rescue.

Register for the online induction at 10am on 23rd October here – https://fb.me/e/1PwlWLn8c

It is sometimes hard to believ

It is sometimes hard to believe that swimming at the beach wasn’t always popular. It wasn’t until the summer of 1905/06 that people started flocking to Bondi to swim, and they came in the thousands. As you can imagine the vast majority of visitors had no swimming skills at all and no experience in the surf. After several drownings, a group of locals and non-locals met at the Royal Hotel Bondi on the 21 February 1907 and formed what was to be known as Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club.

For the first season members volunteered when they wanted to, however with the invention of the Surf Reel there needed to be a minimum of 4 men on the beach to use it. So, a patrol roster was devised for the next season. The 5-day working week didn’t come into place in Australia until 1948, so there was only 1 patrol on a Saturday but 2 on a Sunday.

This photo is of the very first duty roster created in the Surf Life Saving movement. Many famous life members were listed in these duty rosters. Today the club has patrols named after Craven, Fullwood, and Ormsby. Those patrols carry on the proud tradition of “No Lives Lost” on Bondi Beach.

There are many roles that a Lifesaver can play on the beach. One is to be crew in the IRB or Inflatable Rescue Boat. The IRB has a driver and a crew member on board. The crew member helps with direction, signaling, using their weight to balance the boat as it bounces over waves, but mainly to pull people out of the water. This is a skill performed with technique, speed and leverage, not brut force. We can teach you how.

Your journey to become a lifesaver starts with gaining your Bronze Medallion where we teach you all you need to know about beach awareness, safety and rescue. Our next 8 week course starts in October. For more info – https://bondisurfclub.com/get-involved/join-us/

Being a confident swimmer in the surf is an important skill for lifesavers.

However, you don’t have to be confident in the surf to start. To begin your Bronze Medallion course to become a lifesaver you will need to be able to swim 400m in the pool in under 9 minutes. We teach you the rest!

The club has surf swim training sessions at the beach and a 400m surf swim race every Sunday to help develop skills and fitness. There are lots of social swims too and a hot shower at the club after, when needed!

Each surf lifesaving patrol is made up of volunteer lifesavers with different strengths and skills.

There are Patrol Captains, and Vice Captains who manage the patrols both on and off the sand. There are IRB drivers and crew, who take the boat out to rescues. Patrol members may rescue people on rescue boards or with tubes, use first aid skills and resus equipment, keep people between the flags and of course help lost children find their parents.
