No Lives Lost at Bondi Beach

On Sunday 6th February 1938 ju

On Sunday 6th February 1938 just after 3pm, over 200 swimmers were knocked off the sand bank at Bondi Beach. Bondi Lifesavers leapt into action to bring them back to shore.

It was incredibly fortunate that there had been a planned race that afternoon, and also that the incident happened as the club’s patrols were swapping over. There were thankfully 60 Bondi Surf Club members on the beach!

Today we remember the 5 people who lost their lives in what is known as Black Sunday, the largest mass rescue recorded in Australia.
