Celebrating 41 years of Women

Celebrating 41 years of Women in Surf Lifesaving!!
Finally, after several reschedules, an amazing group of women from all over SLS Sydney Branch were able to come together this weekend to share stories, inspiration, and celebrate and cement our strength in Surf Lifesaving.
We heard from 93-year-old Joan Vaughan, with tales of the older days and how she stuck at it to be part of SLS. There were three current and past female Presidents of Sydney Branch clubs, ex iron women athletes, MPs and local sponsors. Bondi’s table included our Director of IRB, three female patrol captains, and Susan Murray – one of the first female Bronze holders 41 years ago! Amazing to be a part of the day! 🙌🙌
The Guest Panel also included our very own Nixy Krite who spoke of her role in Rescue craft, and encouraging other females into this area. The wonderful Suzanne Storrie and Bondi’s own Kerryn Briody both spoke – these amazing women set up the Women’s Mentoring programme, which is into its fourth round now, and has had extremely good success, including myself, Nixy, and Laura Thurtell benefitting from the programme. We encourage you all to take part and apply!
The current statistics show SLSA has 40% female membership, but only 23% of women in leadership roles. Celebratory days like this showcase the strength, breadth, and energy that we can all bring, and encouraged us to keep putting our hands up for roles, and keep giving everything we’ve got to Surf Lifesaving.
Thanks to Sydney branch for the wonderful day!
