No Lives Lost at Bondi Beach

Day: September 16, 2022

Last season we had no lives lo

Last season we had no lives lost at Bondi, and with only 94 rescues, it was our lowest level of rescues since 1975.

Unfortunately, the rest of the country was not as quiet, with people travelling to more distant beaches, to less patrolled areas, and the impacts of floods.

This saw an increase in the overall drowning levels with 141 drowning deaths along the coast, the highest number recorded by SLSA since 2004 when records commenced, and sadly a 16% increase on the 10-year average.

Alarmingly, males accounted for 89% of all coastal drowning deaths, with 49% of coastal drowning deaths occurring more than 5km from a surf lifesaving service, while almost a third occurred within 1 to 5km of a surf lifesaving service.

The attached report provides details and data that we need to shape our strategies and operations into the future, to ensure “no lives lost”
