No Lives Lost at Bondi Beach

I am sad to inform Members tha

I am sad to inform Members that Life Member Leonard Malcolm HARRIS OAM has Passed on peacefully early this morning after a tough battle with cancer.
Len joined Bondi on 14th. March 1960, got his Qualifying Certificate the same Year and his Bronze Medallion in 1961.
Len was a Champion Surf Race and Surf Belt swimmer who was selected in three NSW Teams
He was a member of our Australian Champion Junior Rescue & Resuscitation team in 1963, and Captain of the Australian Open R & R Champions in 1972.
Len then switched to coaching, being in charge of four Bondi teams that won Australian Premierships. Juniors 83-84 & under15’s 82-83, 84-85 & 85-86.
He moved to Queensland in late 1988, but still coached that year’s under 15’s for the first half of the season until he moved. They also went on to win The Aussie’s at the end of season 88-89
In Queensland Len joined Maroochydore SLSC, where he continued to compete in Master’s Events and Coach their R & R Teams.
He also became a Life Member of Maroochydore.

Shocked to hear this sad news this morning… Big Len was a mentor to many of the Coogee Jnr R&R boys, who were a rabble at the start, but we were raised to multiple medal-winning teams and even Australian Champions over the years by our great coach and mentor Lenny. He was an inspiration to all, a larger than life character, who instilled discipline into wayward sons and turned boys into men… a very sad day for all that knew him. They don’t make that kind of guy anymore!
