Bronze Medallion Resources
Enrolment and Set Up
All candidates should have an SLS account from when they signed up and paid for the course. All members will need to complete an Training Enrolment form before the course starts - it is advisable to ask candidates to do this before the first theory session so that you don’t loose time in the session setting everyone up.
By the first theory session all candidates should be able to access:
Members won’t be able to access eLearning until the office has processed their membership so you may need to follow up on this.
Course Content
Everything we train candidates in must align with the techniques and methods in the PSAR35. Please ensure your training team is familiar with the techniques in here prior to any session.
If there is any confusion over how to teach a certain topic, or something is missing from the manual, please reach out directly to the Director of Education or Deputy Director of Education for clarification.
Course Outline
The course outline specifies the structure and content for each session. While weather and surf conditions may occasionally require adjustments, the outlined order of content should be followed wherever possible to ensure more complex tasks build on introductory ones, and to maintain consistency throughout the course.
The course outline can be used for lesson planning with a downloaded copy of the outline here.
Slides for Theory sessions can be downloaded below and edited as necessary:
Admin and Planning
The two documents below can be used to track candidate attendance, trainer availability, trainer experience, and topic allocation.
Initial Candidate Email Template:
After your induction you should an initial email to all candidates joining the course - the above is a template that can be used:
- Ensure you update all times/locations etc to match your group
This document is only a guide and you can use another method if you would like, however this can be downloaded and populated with your trainers and added to your Google Drive folder.
As well as noting trainer availability and experience, the second tab also allows you to plan out who is teaching which topics over the duration of the course.
All candidates attendance needs to be recorded - this sheet can be saved an uploaded to the Assessment to be submitted at the end of the course.
Group Communication
How you communicate with your group is up to you, however a Whatsapp Group has work well in previous years.
***If you have under 18's in your course, their parent or guardian must also be added to the group before the under 18 candidate can join.***
Suggestions for using Whatsapp:
- Add a QR code to your Week 1 Theory Slides for the group to scan and join
- Pin recaps for a couple of days after each session
- Advise your training team that course queries should generally be answered by the lead and mentor trainer to ensure all information provided is correct
Google Drive
All documents you need are linked to this Trainer Portal - you can downlaod whichever you need/want to use and save them in your Google Drive Folder.
- Mentor/Leads: Please ensure you share the folder directly with your training team bu adding them into the permissions.
Course folders can be found here - please navigate to your respective course.

Risk Assessments are conducted via the SurfAssist site.
Once in the app select "Surf Risk Rating" and complete the required form to get your risk rating for the session.
If you can't see the "Surf Risk Rating" option you may need to complete the online module on the SLS eLearning site:
- To find the course login in the SLS eLearning Page > Training Library > Surf Risk Rating > SLS Surf Risk Rating (Enrol)
-
It is advisable all TAFs have completed this course, in addition to any other trainers who may assist with completing risk assessments
BondiSurf.Club
For Trainers:
BondiSurf.club will take you to Trainer HQ. This is most useful for Lead and Mentor trainers as here you can:
- Check the status of candidates online learning
- Complete attendance
- See a complete list of all your candidates
For Candidates:
Bondisurf.club is one of the most important links for new members. This is where they will find links to:

PSAR35
The PSAR35 is the SLS Manual - everything we train candidates in must align with the techniques and methods in this manual.
If there is any confusion over how to teach a certain topic, or something is missing from the manual, please reach out directly to the Director of Education or Deputy Director of Education for Clarification.
First Aid
All candidates on the course must complete their First Aid unless they already have a valid FA qualification. A valid FA qualification must include the 3 below units. HLTAID 009 (Resuscitation) is only valid for 12 month from the date of completion. This must be valid for 6 months after the BM assessment date otherwise the FA course will need to be completed.
- HTLAID009 (Resuscitation)

Online Learning
The Online Learning forms part of the assessment for candidates and must be complete before Week 6 of the course (An earlier deadline may be set if you wish).
-
Lead and Mentor trainers are able to see the progress on candidates online learning via Bondisurf.club.
-
All modules and theory assessments must be completed. There are 15 modules and 11 assessments.
Slides to assist in setting up the online learning can be found here.
Ensure candidates complete the “Bronze Medallion” not “SRC” modules
Shadow Patrols
All candidates must complete:
- 1 AM Patrol
- 1 PM Patrol
Candidates need to be at patrol for its entirety, unless excused early by the Patrol Captain. Candidates are required to be at the AM patrol for setup and the PM patrol for backdown. It is an opportunity for them to see how a patrol operates and ask any questions they may have.
At the end of the shadow patrol candidates must get their Third Party Report (TPR) signed by the PC. They can find the link to this on Bondisurf.club
- Candidates will receive an email with a PDF copy of this which they will need to print out
- Each candidate should have 2 TPRs (1 AM and 1 PM)
Patrol Allocations
The patrol allocation form will open from Week 5 of the course. Candidates can find the link for this on Bondisurf.club.
This must be completed by the end of week 6 to ensure Lifesaving have enough time to complete the allocations before graduation.
Note:
- The allocation form is for candidates to nominate people from their course they would like to patrol with
- It is not to request a specific patrol (please do not encourage candidates to do this)
- Patrol allocations are done based on which patrols need numbers and skills to ensure our patrolling capabilities.
- Candidates who joined due to friends or family may request to join a certain patrol and lifesaving will do their best to accommodate this.
- All candidates will be allocated with at least one person they requested to be with.
- Allocations are a complex process, balancing patrol operations, required skills and candidates preferences and are not as simple are allocating everyone with who they’d like and where they would like
Complaints and Sensitive Topics
Complaints
Advise candidates and trainers of the below complaints procedure:
- If candidates have an issue with another candidate or trainer (non Lead/Mentor) they should speak to the Lead/Mentor trainer
- If candidates have an issue with the Lead Trainer they should speak to the Mentor Trainer
- If candidates have an issue with the Mentor Trainer they can either speak with the Lead Trainer or escalate to the Bronze Coordinator/Deputy Director of Education
Note:
- Where needed the issue can be escalated to:
- Bronze Coordinator
- DDoE
- DoE
- If the complaint is about any of the 3 escalation points above, escalate to the next level. Where the complaint is about the DoE, speak with the DDoE.
Sensitive/Personal Matters
If a candidate speaks to a trainer about a personal/sensitive matter of any kind, that trainer must not discuss the issue with another trainer under any circumstances.
The trainer can discuss with issue with the candidate and if it will have an impact on their ability to complete the course, or raises safety/medical concerns the trainer must advise the candidate they will need to discuss with the Lead/Mentor trainer.
Assessment Day
Before assessment day the Education Team will have created the Assessment Event in the SLS Assessing App.
- You will need to add in each of your candidates into this event before assessment day.
- Each candidate will then receive and email with a link to enrol - they need to complete this before assessment day.
On assessment day you will then need to sign in each candidate - if they haven’t completed the enrolment you won’t be able to sign them in.
- The assessors will fill out the check boxes for the assessment task
You wil also need to make sure you have a training course report and attendance sheet to be uploaded to the event, as well as ensuring all candidate portfolios have everything except the assessment tasks pre-filled, and third party report forms from shadow patrols attached.
Post Course
Once the course has finished:
- Make sure all paperwork/assessment portfolios are kept together and put for the office to manage
- If you haven't already sent out the Participant Feedback Form to candidates then please do this now
- Mentor Trainers: If you have any probationary TAFs in your course then please complete the TAF Endoresement Form for them
