My Nippers Pathway

Nippers are a pathway for your child to become confident in the aquac environment, develop skills, lifelong friends and learn to save lives. Our role is to supplement your child’s swimming educaon and have them learn, adapt and understand the saltwater aquac environment.

We strongly recommend that your child is enrolled in swimming lessons or squads to develop their self confidence.

U6 U7 Key Elements – Capability Pathway
  • All play based activities to gain confidence on the beach and in the shallow surf
  • Obstacle courses and sprint races
  • Introduction to flag racing without the knockout element
  • Encouraged to venture into knee deep surf during games and wades
  • Understanding the flagged area and appreciation for power of the ocean and what a life saver is
  • Wrap up each session with a fun activity
  • Surf Ed – Surf Play 1 & 2
Requirements
  • Nipper age cap & pink rashie
  • Proficiency assessment – floatation / submersion / propulsion skills
U8 Key Elements – Capability Pathway
  • Sprint races & Flags
  • Longer wades into deeper water
  • Introduced to foamie boards in flat conditions
  • Discussion of the rips, flags and being surf safe
  • Significant transition from U8 to U9 in terms of proficiency
  • requirements and acvies they can get involved in
  • Surf Ed – Surf Aware 1
Requirements
  • Nipper age cap & pink rashie
  • Proficiency assessment – 50m swim / floatation / submersion / propulsion skills
Competition Pathway
  • End of season transition to U9s foamie Nipper board
Optional Competition
  • Events include sprints, sprint relays, flags & wade
U9 U10 Key Elements – Capability Pathway
  • Sprints, flags & deep wades
  • SSurf swimming – negoang the breaks
  • SPaddling foamie boards
  • SSurf Ed – Surf Aware 2 & Surf Safe 1
Requirements
  • Nipper age cap & pink rashie
  • Proficiency assessment – U9 100m / U10 150m freestyle swim / floatation / submersion / propulsion skills & 150m open water swim

U11 U12 U13 Key Elements – Capability Pathway

  • Surf Ed- Surf Safe 2, Surf Smart 1 & Surf Smart 2
Requirements
  • Nipper age cap & pink rashie
  • Proficiency assessment – 200m freestyle swim / floatation / submersion / propulsion skills & 200m open water swim
Competition Pathway
  • Sprint & flag training
  • Board training
  • Surf swim training
  • U13 transition to Mal board training
Optional Competition
  • Events include springs, sprint relays, flags, surf swim, swim relay, board race, board relay, Ironman/woman, board rescue, cameron race
U14/SRC Key Elements – Capability Pathway
  • Sprints & flags, surf swimming, paddling, in all conditions, board rescue
  • Move to Mal boards
  • Surf safety & basic CPR
  • Coaching junior age groups
  • Surf Ed – Surf Rescue Certificate, patrol Bondi beach, Water Safety for Nippers
  • Male & female elected Junior Club Captains & Vice Captains by Nippers Committee
Requirements
  • Nipper age cap & pink rashie
  • Proficiency assessment – med 200m pool swim / flotaon / submersion / propulsion skills & 288m open water swim

  • Transion to senior Club

U15 to Opens

Key Elements

Nippers starts a lifelong connecon to Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club. Many Nippers continue to be active at the Surf Club once they have graduated from the U14s

  • Opportunity to gain additional SLS qualifications, eg SRC to Bronze
  • Patrol Bondi Beach
  • Train & compete with the Surf Club’s Open Competitors
  • Learn new disciplines – IRB crew & racing, first aid, surf ski

Water Safety is an important way to get involved. Not only do they give our Nippers confidence whilst training and/or competing but in the process, they ensure their safety and wellbeing. If you are interested in volunteering for Water Safety, please email Kate: competitionnippers@bondisurfclub.com who will provide further information including how to obtain the required SLS Bronze Medallion.
